About the 2010 Tertiary Dance Festival

The Tertiary Dance Festival is an activity of the Tertiary Dance Festival Aotearoa Trust and is a national event that surfaces biennially for a celebratory festival of contemporary, ballet and other dance genres. The Festival offers an extraordinary range of dance arts access and professional development opportunities with a culturally diverse programme of master classes, workshops, classes, forums and performance presentations.

Dance Blogs - Kupenga O Te Kanikani - the 2010 Dance Festival - is an inclusive 4-day event for students and supporters of dance; for secondary, tertiary and community students of dance, for graduates, professional practitioners, dance teachers and dance audiences - a net cast wide in terms of participants.

TDF is hosted this year by the University of Otago’s Physical Education Department and College of Education from Wednesday 30 June to Saturday 3 July. The crammed, cross-genre programme of practical master classes, workshop, forums and performances on offer are pitched to various levels from Open, Beginners, Intermediate and Professional for people engaged in learning dance and to cater to the wider community.

Lunchtime forums throughout the events will debate topics of currency and interest ‐ your input and ideas are needed! All participants are welcome. To highlight teaching practices a range of professional dance provocateurs – or mentors - will observe each of the sessions and offer discussion emphases for round-table sessions at the end of each day. The learning, creative and networking encounter will be huge and ongoing for Festival participants.

Dance Blogs - Kupenga O Te Kanikani will be the 7th Tertiary Dance Festival in New Zealand and a first for Dunedin and the South Island. The Festival is all about celebrating the power and diversity of dance teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand. An important focus of the festival is to honour New Zealand’s great dance practitioners, many of whom graduated from the University of Otago’s Physical Education Department, which was the first dance training programme in NZ! This early programme and its graduates spawned all pioneers of dance education and performance in NZ. To this end there is to be an Award offered that acknowledges the innovative and enduring practices of our greatest teachers.

The planning committee is working hard to put together an exciting programme for you. Can’t make promises about the weather though so bring lots of layers!

The Festival follows closely on the heels of Dunedin’s University of Otago’s Dance Research Symposium: Dancing Across the Disciplines: Cross Currents of Dance Research and Performance Throughout the Global Compass, 28 – 30 June
